Sinds maandag 26 juli is de Hollandse Waterlinie officieel UNESCO Werelderfgoed. Samen met de Stelling van Amsterdam ontvangen ze deze status en vormen ze de Hollandse Waterlinies. De Stelling van Amsterdam is al sinds 1996 UNESCO werelderfgoed.
Met De Hollandse Waterlinie is het UNESCO erfgoed uitgebreid. Een hele logische stap want de twee waterlinies vertellen samen een verhaal van de strategische inzet van water bij de verdediging van Nederland met water als bondgenoot.
De UNESCO Werelderfgoed status bevestigt de internationale betekenis van het unieke Nederlandse erfgoed. Het biedt bescherming en behoud van de militairhistorische waterlinies en tegelijkertijd economische en maatschappelijk kansen voor een duurzame exploitatie van het erfgoed.
